Management strategies include the following:
- Define aims against which success of treatment can be measured:
- Reducing discomfort.
- Preserving range of movement.
- Enabling active movement.
- Preserving function.
- Limiting consequences of immobility e.g. pain, pressure ulcers.
- Minimise aggravating factors.
- Postural management.
- Promote normal movement.
- Maintain joint range (passively).
- Prevent overuse.
- Use splints, orthoses or serial casting (plaster casts) to support posture.
- Review seating in both static chairs and wheelchairs.
- Systemic medications.
- Focally active medications.
