Aim: To understand the physical impairments which can occur following an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and to understand how these impairments can affect a person’s functional abilities and quality of life.

Physical impairments may be mild, moderate or severe.  By understanding the nature of the physical impairment(s) we can better support the person and their families/carers.

On admission to hospital it is important to:

  • Be aware of the safety needs of the patient e.g. falls risk, agitation.
  • Establish safe transfer methods for the patient in ward environment.
  • Establish the positioning needs of the patient in their bed and/or chair.
  • Be aware of the patient’s cognitive and communication problems.
  • Liaise with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) regarding the above.

Once the patient’s rehabilitation programme has been established:

  • Continue to maintain a safe environment for the patient.
  • Follow guidelines related to moving and positioning.
  • Liaise with the MDT regarding rehabilitation goals and give appropriate support and reassurance in relation to any goals set.
  • Encourage and support the patient to work towards their goals.
  • Provide information and emotional support to families.
  • Help the patient come to term with any adjustment difficulties.
