Episodic memory refers to our ability to lay down memories of events, things that happen to us or that go on in our world, our experiences – news events, holidays, film stories etc. Episodic memory is personal; it refers to the events and emotions experienced through life. Following brain injury, episodic memory may be impaired: the person may no longer be able to lay down new memories relating to events, experiences and emotions experienced after the brain injury (anterograde amnesia), or they be unable to recall some of the experiences they had prior to the injury (retrograde amnesia).
