It is important that people with bowel dysfunction are given appropriate support to manage the problem. The following is a list of practical steps which may be helpful:
- Orientate to the enviroment. Make sure the location of the toilet is known and clearly signed.
- Ensure a full assessment of bowel function is carried out. It is important to ask the patient and carers about any problems they may have experienced.
- Use Bowel Chart to document bowel patterns, if neccessary.
- Ensure satisfactory diet and fuid intake.
- Be aware that some medication may have an adverse effect on bowel function.
- Ensure adequate assistance is provided to the individual for their toileting needs.
- Implement toileting regime if neccessary.
- Treat all possible causes of bowel dysfunction.
