Carry out activities within the naturalistic environment wherever possible and use items within the environment for non-verbal cues, e.g., brushing teeth at the sink and not at the bedside
Place your hand over the individual’s hand to help start the movement and withdraw if/when they continue the movement
Minimise the amount of verbal cues – the person might find it easer to follow demonstration, rather than relying on verbal instruction
When demonstrating staff should sit next to the person, not opposite as this could cause confusion with regard to spatial orientation
Encourage the person to learn a task using a consistent sequence
Ask an occupational therapist for an assessment and advice
