Unfortunately, people with dysphagia are at increased risk of experiencing a severe choking episode. Staff working regularly with people who are dysphagic should receive training in Basic Life Support (BLS). If someone chokes and is unable to clear the obstruction:

  • Stay calm.
  • Shout for assistance, use alarm system if available.
  • If you have received appropriate training in basic life support, carry out procedures according to Resuscitation Council (UK) Choking Guidelines (resus.org.uk).
  • Call 999 if at home or in a public place.
  • Call 2222  if in hospital in Scotland.
  • Call local emergency number if in any other care facility.
