It is essential that in the early stages of brain injury rehabilitation, professionals involved consider the topic of return to employment if appropriate for the person.  This will depend on the extent of their difficulties i.e. the impact of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). It is important to gather basic facts about the type of job the person did and address any concerns the person may raise.  It is also necessary to try to ascertain what the person’s entitlements may be in terms of financial support in order to provide appropriate advice.

 

If the person is likely to be able to return to their previous employment, they may require support to do so.  If unable to return, alternatives to their current employment may need to be considered.   In either case, the person may benefit from the support of a Specialist Occupational Therapist.

A Specialist Occupational Therapist will be able to analyse the person’s job demands, assess their current abilities/difficulties and make recommendations with regarding their suitability to resume employment. Recommendations may include:

In the event that the person is unable to return to their current job and no alternative can be identified, the Occupational Therapist may think it appropriate to refer to other specialist services who may be able to provide support for the person to pursue alternative daily activities (e.g. volunteering, leisure and social opportunities, further education).
