Assessment of bladder dysfunction must include:
- Information about bladder function prior to admission, including previous investigations, treatment and management.
- General medical, surgical and obstetric history.
- List of current medications.
- Symptom profile.
- Impact on the person’s quality of life.
- Any relevant psychological factors.
- Urinalysis.
- Frequency/volume chart for 3 days.
- Bowel chart for 7 days. (Interpretation of Bowel Chart).
- Physical examination should include a pelvic floor assessment and digital rectal examination when indicated.
- A post void bladder scan should be carried out if possible where there are signs of incomplete bladder emptying, frequency, urgency or overflow incontinence.
